A Very Belated Post….

What can I say? It has been well over 2 weeks since I have posted anything but its OK. It gave me a chance t think about blogging and why I got involved. Β It has been nearly a year since I started writing this blog and to begin with, I was using it as a tool to motivate me to keep writing stories. Which I did. Then, in about August/September my main focus became blogging. Especially when I started introducing themed posts. Coming up with content for those posts started to stress me out a little, I’ll be honest with you there. However, I continued blogging and after a while (November time) I was almost resenting it. Why? Well, I stopped working on my WIP. All of my posts on writing goals were completely futile. I wasn’t even looking at my work let alone contributing to it.

Come December, I decided to do something a little different with Poeta Officium….shake it up a little. Which would mean more work on blogging. With the little spare time I do have, I was concerned that my WIP was getting thrown to the side completely, collecting dust on the shelf. Which it was. And is. Β And I don’t feel particularly happy about that. It seems that the blog somewhat took over.

So I’ve decided to cut back on blogging to once a week at this stage. Saturdays work well for me and I will set aside some time in the evening to post. I still want to actively participate in your blogs but to keep up with 3/4 times a week on mine is simply shifting too much focus on what I originally set out to do – which is to write a novel.

I’m a little saddened about this – part of me feels like I will be missing out on a lot – however something has to give at this stage. I’m guessing it will only be for a month or so because the kids go to school at the end of January. I will suddenly have 5 days a week of semi freedom which will give me much more time to get back to a couple more days of blogging. But for the time being, I need to cut back to only one.

My Saturday posts will be longer than normal – still full of goals and inspiration, motivation and writing-related. I’m thinking its time to participate in another writing challenge but I think I’ll wait till I have more time.

Oh, and one more thing before I sign off – I’ve received some awards during my absence and I will graciously accept those in my next post πŸ™‚

Finally, I’d like to welcome one and all to twenty thirteen – I hope everyone had a superb holiday break! See you next week πŸ™‚

  1. Hey Virginia,
I know the feeling. When I was at Write A Book with Me last year, blogging several times a week (even if the posts were short) became a burden instead of a creative outlet. The last thing I wanted was for that to come through in my posts so I admit I was relieved when the blog became redundant to the Holly Lisle Write a Book with Me. The once a week/ four times a month schedule at A Scenic Route seems to work okay for me now, and allows me to keep the focus on my fiction writing progress.
In the end though, if I’m blogging more than I’m writing fiction, I would cut back even more.
It’s always nice to read about your progress though! Keep at it.

    Happy writing in 2013!

    • Thanks Kirsten! All the very best of writing for you too this year πŸ™‚
I agree, blogging was becoming less and less of a creative outlet and more of a stress so this is why I chopped the cord. I very much enjoy connecting with you and the others and seeing what everyone is going through but I didn’t want it to become a chore. πŸ™‚

  2. Happy new year to you, too, Virginia! I’m finding that blogging is more like an ebb and flow in my life, and I’m liking it that way. However you proceed, I’m so glad to hear from you! All the very best to you, dear friend! xoxoM

    • Aw Margarita, all the very best to you too! You are such a sweetheart πŸ™‚
Thanks for your support over the past year, I look forward to your blog and the gorgeous pics of NYC πŸ™‚

  3. Nice to see you posting V πŸ™‚

I totally get where you’re coming from with this….I’ve cut down to 4 days a week then after April I’ll be going down to 3.

I remember my hubby asking me a few month ago “are you a blogger or a writer?” I want to be both, but there aren’t enough hours in the day 😦

    • Thanks Vikki πŸ™‚
Yep, I was asking myself that very same question! As much as I do love the blogosphere, I didn’t want it to overshadow the fiction. Saying all that though, I wouldn’t be here where I am today writing wise if it wasn’t for the support of you and the others so blogging was definitely the right thing to start! πŸ™‚

  4. Happy New Year, Virginia. I only post twice a week and check other posts twice a week, so don’t worry about cutting back! It’s necessary, otherwise you miss out on other things πŸ˜€

Great to see you back and I’m looking forward to your weekly posts.

    • Thanks Dianne, happy new year to you too πŸ™‚
It is necessary, especially as we are on school holidays now. I think going down to once a week will put more meaning in the posts instead of ‘well, its xxxday, time for a scheduled post’ – it wasn’t fun anymore. Heres hoping this strategy will be cause for improvement πŸ™‚

  5. Good shift in strategy. Viel Erfolg.
