Goals For The Week

Ok so right off the bat I’m going to say that I will not be monitoring my word count for a while. Why should I keep feeling disappointed? It’s just not worth it. I know I’m doing well with my WIP but this 3000 word goal I have put on myself is getting frustrating because I haven’t been able to beat it this week. Again. I did write, closer to 2500 words though (which is about 1500 words more than I managed last week).

Nevertheless – I wrote. And I have decided to give my main character, Emma, a challenge. I’ve been too far in her head lately. I want to give her something to sink her teeth in out in the real world. So, I have introduced her to someone new. A woman. Who may or may not help her. I havent decided yet. So far, the only characters I have put Emma with have been male so I’m interested to see how she will go having a female to hang out with from time to time.

My second goal was to finish my family history assignment – which I did by the end of the weekend. So yay.

Goal number 3 was to continue with the tentative edit of my WIP. I spent Monday afternoon doing this and I felt very proud of my work once I finished. Yes, lots and lots of red pen all over the place but I really feel this story is a good one. I like it. I’m excited by it 🙂

So. My goals for this week? Well, my goal is to not only challenge Emma but I feel like I need to challenge myself.  I was having a bit of a surf this morning (on the internet, not the beach!) and I came across this blog here and the 7 day writing challenge jumped out at me. Nothing too serious, nothing too over the top. Just something different to get my mind thinking outside the box for a change. Go take a look for yourself, it may just inspire you to challenge yourself too.

To summarise – the goals this week are:

1/ Participate in the above mentioned 7 day writing challenge (I will start this on Monday)

2/ Set up a difficult scene/situation for Emma

I think I will leave it at that for tonight. Like I said before – no more word count goals. I think I’d rather focus on characters for a while, work on their stories and challenges.

Feel free to share your goals – and remember to tune in to tomorrows Sunday Session! 🙂

  1. You’re so right, Vee. It’s not about how many words you write, it is definitely about what you feel you accomplish. That 7 day challenge actually sounds like fun! Want to compare notes as we go along? xoxoM

Seeeee, that’s what I hate about goals….that awful feeling when you don’t achieve them 😉

    • Thanks 🙂 Yes, I agree – which is exactly why I’ve thrown the goal list out the window. Lifes too short to feel like crap every Saturday night when I’ve realised I havent reached the goals I set myself for the week!! 🙂 x

  4. Goals are good, but I try not to take them too seriously because life happens. I cannot help if work becomes busier so I lose break time I might have used to edit with, or someone in the family gets sick, or the cat barfs on the carpet. For me goals give me a direction, a plan of action. I think it is great that you post your goals and work toward them. Why? You make progress. You know where you want to go with your WIP and you are marching in the right direction. So you didn’t hit a word count, big deal. You WROTE, therefore you succeeded. And you keep writing, good on ya!

    • Thank you! Every bit of positive reinforcement helps 🙂
I don’t experience the cat barfing. What I do face is child barfing. I don’t know which is worse…..

      • Child, definitely. Strangely, whenever my son threw up, some strange parent impulse made me dive for and attempt to catch said projectile.. Ewww.
